Canada Post is raising its mailing rates
Quote:
The Canadian Press
TORONTO — Canada Post is raising its mailing rates on Monday.
The cost of mailing a first-class letter within Canada will increase to 54 cents from 52.
Letters to the United States increase by two cents to 98 cents, while letters to all other foreign countries rise by a nickel to $1.65.
The Crown corporation had also proposed cashing in on online shopping with a 100 per cent increase in postal rates for thick envelopes that are widely used to ship Internet purchases.
But in a statement, Canada Post says changes for irregular oversize lettermail that would have seen the price jump to $5.50 from $2.25 for packages weighing between 200 grams and 500 grams were not introduced.
The increases have drawn criticism from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, which says it opposes "arbitrary prices increases" for what it calls undependable service.

They didn't include the oversize lettermail overpricing yet, but will any of this change your buying or selling.

Re: Canada Post is raising its mailing rates
No, I've honestly never seen oversized letter envelopes used for transformers, but maybe it's because the things I buy are too big. :-p
On a side note, don't stamps "never expire" now? Why don't we just buy a few thousand, sit on them, and resell them for profit 5 years from now?
Now that I think about it, the price of stamps probably doesn't keep pace with inflation, it's probably not worth it...

Re: Canada Post is raising its mailing rates
I am used to it already.... wish the government didn't run Canada Post, we are seriously getting ripped off people.
I was looking at some parcels from Japan and the sender paid 1500 yen (which is about $20 and some change in Cdn) for EMS shipping to Canada. I took the same parcel, placed it on the scale and got a price of $78 and some change to go EMS.
WTF?

Re: Canada Post is raising its mailing rates
No. But the crappy Cdn/US exchange rate has effectively stopped 50% of my purchases.

In China, EMS shipping is about $15 to ship 2 deluxes. From Canada to China, it costs about $60.

Re: Canada Post is raising its mailing rates
Well, but isn't the explanation for shipping that we're paying more to subsidize those in remote communities? I mean Japan is pretty densely populated. It seems to make sense it would be cheaper there.
If we allowed private post companies I'm sure they'd have much cheaper service to prime Canadian cities like Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, maybe even Hamilton, but the rural communities would likely be out of luck.
That's the economic theory anyways. :-p
