Re: New vehicle ? What should I get ?
How come you are against Toyota and Honda? They consistently make small SUVs that are the top or near the top of the segment --> the RAV4, 4Runner, Pilot and CRV are all excellent vehicles.
If you aren't adverse to Mazda's .. the CX7 is well reviewed.
For domestic cars, I like the new Dodge Journey --> it is well reviewed and has a lot of standard equipment. The price is amazing for the amount of goodies you get. Dodge Nitro is decent as well.
The competitors of the Dodge SUVs are the Ford Edge (crossover) and Ford Escape. The Edge is a little more expensive than it's rival the Dodge Journey but also has a lot of standard equipment.
Still, I think you should consider Toyota's and Honda's.

Re: New vehicle ? What should I get ?
Subaru Forester has good things going for it.
And then there's the Mazda speed3. Which, is more station wagon than SUV, but I digress.

I won't drive anything I can pick up and roll on it's side
Their just not for me, too small.
My gf has a Ford Escort ZX-2 and I don't fit in that at all (or my bosses Mustang).

I'm checking up on Forester, reviews are soso.
No budget, but the Porsche/BMW SUV's aint gonna happen.
Ford Escape looks good but I guess all the salesmen(at all dealerships today) were home watching a sporting event instead of working
So still not sure...

Re: New vehicle ? What should I get ?
I'll admit the Japanese brands can be small and difficult to get in (6'1" here, sometimes I have to "transform" into "midget mode" to get in), but that's what test driving's for!

Re: New vehicle ? What should I get ?
Still, I say give the Japanese SUV's a try, I'm sure they've smartened up and began aiming at the N.American customer demographics for SUVs.
Darn, your Autoshow is in April, Toronto's is in a few weeks, time to drool over some of those new wheels :P

Too bad you already discounted Hyundai. I was going to suggest a test drive with an 09 Sante Fe; AWD, full sized SUV for under $25K MSRP.
If you have to go a NA automaker, there's always the Pontiac Vibe; GM pricing with Toyota engineering.
It all depends on what you plan to use the car for mind you.
