Gift cards are like cash. Only they sometimes expire. And you can only use them at one store (or one set of stores). So basically they do the same job as cash, only not as well.
Ah well, I guess its the thought that counts, even if its faulty thought.
"Hey, I couldnt think of an item to get you, so Im giving you currency and limiting your options instead. Get whatever you want. Provided they have it at <insert store here>"
