A historical question about the G1 toyline.

Paging Protoman, GMFan101, etc...

I was wondering this last night and really have no idea on the answer (granted it was late and the brain was not functioning well).

We all know the early G1 toys were borrowed/integrated from other lines (eg. Diaclone), but what was/were the first toy(s) made exclusively for the Transformers toy line?

Re: A historical question about the G1 toyline.

I dunno if the original minibots were pulled from anything but if they were then the season 2 minibot would be next in line with oddly Topspin and Twintwist for the Autobots. I know Blitzwing came from another line first but I don't think Astrotrain did so he possibly the first Decepticon mold...though the coneheads would be next they just had retooling done to them.

It really wasn't till 86 we got an explosion of original molds.

Re: A historical question about the G1 toyline.

Both Jumpstarters come from the Diaclone line.

EDIT: Doing some more research, it appears that Astrotrain was a Diaclone mold that never got released. Makes sense, the engineering is the same as Blitzwing and that other jet-copter-robot triplechanger.

Re: A historical question about the G1 toyline.

looks like it was the "original movie" toys.this is the product brochure from 86' and although alot of them are basically repaint/remolds of earlier bots, the newbies would be rodimus, springer, broadside, sandstorm, metroplex, try pticon, etc.
although blaster's new tape bots i'm not sure if they were previously released in another japanese line or not.

it seems like the newest non repaint/remolds are all from the original movie.

Re: A historical question about the G1 toyline.

Metroplex and the Combiners were designed together, as we've seen the torsos combine with Metroplex. I can't remember if they were borrowed from some other line though.

I know the Deluxe Insecticons were taken from some other line as well.

The toy version of Galvatron was based on early concept art from the movie. So he may actually be the first newly designed Transformer specifically for the series.

edit: I say Galvatron's the first because the others look pretty close to their final animation models. Galvatron's fairly off, but he's bang on for some of the earliest concept art.

Re: A historical question about the G1 toyline.

The first toys 100% made by Hasbro for the Transformers line was the 1986 line. Artist and designer Floro Dery was commisioned by Hasbro to make a slew of characters for the 1986 line and thus characters like Hot Rod, Kup, Blurr and many others were born. This was also the first time characters were animated and drawn first before toys were made. Granted we still got older Diaclone molds in Ultra Magnus and others.

1985 toys like the Jumpstarters (Diaclone), Omega Supreme/Shockwave (Toybox), Powerdashers (Diaclone), Omnibots (Diaclone), Perceptor (Microman) and MANY others all had origins from other sources.

Everything 1984-1985 toyline wise (Mail order or otherwise minus any paper stuff like STARS or so on) were taken from Diaclone (Takara), Microman (Takara), Macross/Dorvack/Beetras (Takatoku/Bandai) and Mechabot-1/Astro Magnum (ToyBox).
