If anyone else has input, I would like to know too.
There are a few different products techniques you can use, none of which is a 100% match for the original because the original is actually vacuum metalized, and not "chromed". Or at least that's my understanding from having read what others post on the topic.

Here are some links to tutorial threads on tfw2005.com:

Re: Customizing Q&A Thread

I have a question. Dremels. Which bits are the most useful in customizing TFs? Links to pictures is helpful.

Re: Customizing Q&A Thread

Don't have any pics for you, but what I call the essentials/most frequently used are these:

Adjustable dremel head: one that twists to accept bits at varying sizes

Multi sized drill bit set

Re enforced quick switch cutting wheels (thin and plastic cutting versions)

Quick switch bit ( can be purchased in bundle with discs)

Large and small cylinder sanding bit

Re: Customizing Q&A Thread

this is a quick shot of the main basic ones i use.
one is a diamond edged cutoff wheel, waaaaay more safe for plastic cutting than carbon/composite discs.
you should only use the carbon/composite discs when you have to cut metal, never plastic as it melts to itself and has a extremely high fracturing/shattering danger when used in plastic.this diamond edged one is one of the best/safest for cutting plastics.

the second is a sanding drum bit, with interchangable sanding sleeves.good for quickly taking out "flashing" after cuts.

the third is what i use more for "coring" plastic.the very tip also has teeth on it which helps "bottom out" the plastic when need be.this third bit is actually more of a router bit than a dremel bit but it's basically the same principle.

the diamond disc will set you back from 10-12 bucks(depends where you go)
the sanding drum should come with your dremel,if not, probably just a few bucks
the coring bit will set you back from 15-20 bucks.
hope that helps(though a wee bit late to the party)

Re: Customizing Q&A Thread

As someone who is interested in embarking on repainting and customizing, I find this thread fascinating. I have a Supreme Class Starscream I want to do up as my 1st project.
Again, wicked thread!

No I haven't but they do use plastic taper pins that are real thight and may be glued, at least it seems that way on the last 2 newer tf's that I have taken apart. I have broken a couple of alignment pins myself to get bots apart, can always be reglued.

Not much help but thats all I can offer you

Thanks for the tip, was reading same thing over at the other forum, but its not too detail. Will try the soldering trick to heat up the metal from the plastic and make it a bit loose.

I got my rotary tool from CrappyTire, those el cheapo Jobmate brands, with those bits included,. Cheap but does the job fairly well. I usually use B, F & G, wanted to buy mini size drill but dont know if it will fit with the rotary tool itself.

I have Universe Starscream and was wondering if I can repaint him into Skywarp and if so what do I need?
