Re: Earth Hour
I keep thinking Earth Hour is next weekend, so I missed it.
Had I participated, I have no idea what I'd have done. Probably just huddled in the cold dark and stared at the wall.
Couldn't read, there's no lights to read by. Couldn't listen to music, that consumes power (battery power, but still, conservation is conservation). The same would apply to any handheld game if I had any.
Couldn't write in a journal or anything, that requires light.
Couldn't light candles, the smoke alarm might go off, which is really bad with all the lights out so I can't see where I'm going.
Hell, I couldn't even eat since the microwave, stove, and toaster oven are all electric. And running the fridge and freezer require power.
Can't heat myself, because the heating's electric here.
Maybe I would have pounded back a few shots of whiskey and just enjoyed the dark. Although often drinking gets me a bit wacky and slightly paranoid.
Without electricity I'm completely screwed. No way to eat, no way to entertain, no way to learn, and no way for me to fend off the elements.
Its like frickin camping without the whole pretending to enjoy it thing.
edit:
This whole conservation of energy (and water for that matter) is a crock. Instead of turning off power and managing when we're able to do things, we should focus more on making more energy efficient devices.
And at the same point, move all buildings off grid. We'll have to do that anyways if we ever want to colonize any other spot in the galaxy. Distributed power networks are a real liability, especially when your air supply depends on it.
I mean, with all the high tech gadgets n stuff on the ISS, they supply all the power they need from solar sources alone.
Why do modern PCs have like 500 watt power supplies while there are laptops with comparable specs that consume MUCH less?
I say focus on energy efficiency instead of conservation. Make things more efficient and consume less power when used.
We're going to use electrical power no matter what to do the things we need to do. We're all addicted. That's not going to change.
