It's one point per dollar. So if you're 3,000 points short, you need to spend $3,000. Also, any returns will deduct points from your total at the same rate.
But, yes, I was told the same about being able to renew Edge status with points. I have five days left until my renewal, and enough points to cover it, so we'll see if that actually happens...

Re: GameStop.ca (formerly EB Games) Transformers Sightings and discussion
I was told that it?s only 6000 to renew my Onyx. At lease that?s what it?s been the past 2 years .
Which is good considering I?ve got over 30k points
I really hope they don?t take them away

TLDR: you actually only need to earn, at most, 3,000 points in a year to keep onyx.
You need to have 12,000 points to get onyx. And you need to earn 6,000 points a year in order to "maintain your status" (IE not lose points).
At the end of the year they take the difference from what you did earn and what you needed to earn and subtract that from your point balance. So lets say you start the year with 12,000 points. At the end of the year you earned 3,500 points. So now your point balance is 15,500. Since you didn't earn the full 6,000 points they will deduct the difference of 6,000 and 3,500, which would be 2,500. So when your membership renews your balance will be 13,000 (15,500 - 2,500), which is still above the 12,000 you need to keep onyx. So you can see, that you really only need to earn 3000 points in a year at most to keep your membership, and the higher your starting balance, the less you have to earn.
This is the formula: S = the starting balance in the year
E = what you earned in the year
M = what you need yearly to keep your membership level
B = the balance after your renewal
S + E - (M - E) = B
example:
12000 + 3000 - (6000 - 3000) = 15000 - 3000 = 12000
And since you cant use your points for anything other than keeping your membership level... after you reach onyx, who cares how many points you lose. As long as your ending balance is still above 12000 you get to keep your onyx membership.
Also if you have 30,000 points, you can go 3 years without spending a dime and you'd still have enough points to keep onyx. (30,000 - 6,000 - 6,000 - 6,000 = 12,000)

Was that before, or after they suspended paid renewals (for platinum)?

I don't know the specifics, but the guy also said something about when you're paying off a preorder, that preorders are "worth more points"
So maybe the more preorder items paid for, possibly worth more than (point per dollar) exchange rate?
We'll see I suppose
From these responses, sounds like (what I heard) is still part & parcel of "the way things used to be"
So I wonder if this manner of proceedings, is still potentially on the chopping block w GS?
Or if "all that got changed" was the axe-ing of paid platinum renewals
