Sure there are people there like that, but the other 98% are perfectly normal.
Why would you start a discussion like this in the first place? Clearly you want to stir up some drama. You did say you were bored I after all.

I posted the thread to see if others felt like I did. Apparently not.

Re: Do some collectors scare you
My wife once put it all into perspective:
We had a house warming party with all our friends once we got our townhome organized and unpacked. We have 3 kids and only 3 bedrooms (boys bunk bed in one room, daughter in the other, master bedroom is where we make the magic happen**) so the lone Detolf and two modest shelves housing my TFs are restricted to our walk in closet. I overheard my wife giving the tour of the place to our friends some of which chuckled in good manner to my MPs and G1s.
My wife then chimed "Hey, it's better than collecting hardcore and scat porn."
Collecting for me is 80% nostalgia and 20% appreciation of craftsmanship. As a child of the 80s these were the characters that fought incredible battles in my dreams and these are the toys I dreamed of. Why wouldn't I indulge now that I have the buying power and knowledge? True, some fellow collectors are more OCD and completist and to them I tip my hat for having the drive and wherewithal. In the end you and I are collectors because we like Transformers and we take it to the degrees we want to.
There is absolutely no shame in that.
**(Yeah right...not as frequent as you'd think after 11 years of marriage)

Re: Do some collectors scare you
Don't stereotype people based on your misconceptions.
I've just recently started going to the toy conventions and shows this past year and I am always amazed at the wide variety of people that attend them. I've also had the pleasure of meeting some fellow members of this site and they are some of the best people I have ever met.
Do yourself a favour and get out and experience something new like going to a convention. You never know you might actually enjoy it and rekindle that collector in you. Worst case Ontario you might not enjoy it and realize that they are definitely not for you but at least you won't live the rest of your life wondering what they are really like.

Re: Do some collectors scare you
What you see is actually a projection of your own inner turmoil.
You clearly like to collect but have some weird hang ups regarding it.
You must feel like you are an overweight loser to assume that every other collector is.
We are living in a world where "nerd" has become a pop culture phenomenon and something to be proud of.
Stop worrying so much about what others think, not everyone sees things as black and white as you do.

Re: Do some collectors scare you
For me, knowing there's other more crazed toy collectors out there spending hundreds of dollars on a single item, is quite comforting while I hunt for sales and deals on the ones that are interesting to me. I've got only a couple of the masterpieces, Had to get Soundwave with all the minions, and eventually got myself an MP-01 Prime. My friends don't much care about my ever growing collection, but it's just fun to collect things and show it off when I can. My collection is mostly G1 inspired characters, and I'm starting into the Beast Wars era slowly.
As for your collection, you mentioned you were waning on your plastic crack addiction. Well if you want to offload some of your collection, post it on here and I'll see what I can take off your hands (for a good price hopefully).

Re: Do some collectors scare you
I think there is an old maxim, "it's what's inside that counts". If a guy is 400lbs, breathing heavy, covered in sweat from the effort of movement, wearing a faction logo and stuttering with excitement as he discussed the potential for the release of MP Hotshot, so (TF) what?
None of those attributes will tell you much about who that person is.
If weird is defined as, "not normal" then everyone is weird. Anyone who is not weird is merely a closet weirdo and probably weirder than the obviously weird weirdos.
I think that you should try going to a TF Con and giving some of those weirdos a shot. I will give you odds that the majority of weirdos that you meet will surprise you by revealing that they are just people like the rest of us and, I'll bet (if you relax and keep an open mind) that you will have a fantastic time.
On the other hand, maybe your waning interest in the plastic means that collecting is not for you anymore and it is time to move on to something else.

I am one of those that keeps my crazy hobby to myself and actually have started caring less and less about this plastic addictions. For me to many people are like hoarders, overweight, no life, etc
Sure I like collecting but to me it would be less eerie for zombies chasing me down a street. Its a little unnerving that adults take this hobby a little to seriously
What are your thoughts

If you think your hobby is crazy, why bother with it? Maybe you value other people's opinions over yours, hence someone told you it's crazy and now you believe it to be so?
By the way, what would you consider as a normal person?
