Selling off your collections
I have noticed a flurry of people selling off toys. Its funny to see how many people throw hard earned money on plastic only to be sold away because of boredom. Would it have not been better to buy some investments? The way I look at it, it devalues the brand and it least you have some dinosaurs in your living rooms.
Thats why when I collect I ensure that I get something with longevity. IE hot toys

Re: Selling off your collections
many collector's think that Transfomers can be flipped for quick cash down the road.. Unless your collecting for the fun of it you might want to find another way to fund your habbits

Re: Selling off your collections
The way I see it, it's a way to keep the brand alive!
How else would new collectors get their hands on old stuff if we older collectors held on to eveything?
Hell, I know that there's stuff in my collection that I wouldn't have if someone else didn't let it go.
And besides which, I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't live in the Tardis. I only have a finite amount of room in my house, and if I'm just going to keep stuff boxed up and never look at it or display it, well that's hoarding. So I might as well let someone else have chance to own it.

Re: Selling off your collections
It's less of "instead of TFs, I should invest".
For some, it's just a reshuffling of priorities in life. New house, new car, new baby, or maybe just bills catching up.
For others, it may be that they realize they want to narrow down the focus of their collection. Maybe they just discovered Hot Toys, and realized that most mainline TFs don't do it for them anymore.
As it has been reiterated a gazillion times; TFs, save for some select pieces, don't appreciate in value all that much, and shouldn't be looked at as a replacement for actual investments. On the flipside, while investments will (probably) make you (more) money, as a toy collector, you won't enjoy the investments the same way.
For example, I'm in the bucket of people selling the bulk of their TFs. I still love TFs, but I realized that they're taking up too much space, and I'm not deriving the same sort of enjoyment with collecting them as I did back when I first started, and I've decided to focus and narrow down my collection to either select pieces or onto other toylines.

This sums the next point I was going to make nicely.

Point of view,... with a collection (complete collection,.. the reason some collect sets) there may be no alternative at present than to display some and leave the rest stored away I wouldnt class that as... hoarding....... just not having the proper room at the present, and that can change in future as opposed to breaking up a collection just for the sake of limited space at this point in time with pieces that may not be easy or impossible to obtain afterwards.....so I guess its to each his own

Re: Selling off your collections
Its a hobbie like so many others... I buy TF toys, others spends just as much money on sports, casino, movies, heck even cigarettes or recreational drugs even...
The only reason I sell some of my stuff... make room for some more others LOL I'm running out of space for my TFs

Re: Selling off your collections
I'm constantly selling off my stuff. I don't consider buying toys as an investment whatsoever. I'll buy them, enjoy them and then move on. If I lose money...meh...consider it a rental fee. If I'm not enjoying something there is no reason for me to keep it. I'd recently been buying figures for the sake of buying them; just in case I regret it later. Typing that just makes me realize, even more, how insane that is. Once my current sell off is done, I'll own about 5 tfs. I can still enjoy the brand without buying stuff. With great reviewers out there, it's almost like I've played with the toy already lol.
Oh and if you're buying hot toys as an investment...lol...good luck with that one. That ship has sailed, considering basic figures are $200 plus new.

Re: Selling off your collections
Space and refocusing has nothing to do with investments.
Most people are selling for that, not money, classics as a line has dived in value due to a ton of people selling them off for Masterpiece, but it doesn't stop people from selling.
