Given that it's a 60gb model, I'm guessing it's well past it's warranty period... Still, probably cheaper to get it repaired through Sony than buy a new one. (That said, it's not dramatically cheaper - unless you have backwards compatibility getting a newer machine with a larger hard drive and new warranty may be worth it - and even so, there's no guarantee that you'll get the same unit back.)
If it's a HDD issue, you could try swapping the HDD. I -think- the PS3 just uses a 2.5" 5400 rpm laptop drive (you can try looking up the specs). Sony has instructions on how to replace the HDD if you want to upgrade/swap it yourself.
You could also try googling on how to fix a YLOD. Lots of advice out there depending on what the cause is.
Sounds like it could be the power supply, though, if it cut out in the middle of a game. That, I think, has to go to Sony.
