Smoke Damage
Hello!
I just got a lot of Transformers for cheap, but they are all smoke damaged. You know, there is a mixture of smoke tar and dust on the figures. They also reak.
I understand that some of it can't be cleaned up, but I'm trying anyway.
Currently, I'm using a weak pinesol solution with a Mr. Clean Magic eraser to clean up the panels and flat spots, and a tooth brush for the more intricate bits. It's slow but it gets 80% of the crud off. I then oxyclean the white parts. I don't know if this does anything but it can't hurt. Finally, I'm airing out the tfs, then storing them in a rubbermaid bin with a box of baking soda to catch any of the last volatiles.
Are there any other suggestions for cleaning these figures? Experiences? Mods please put this thread in the right forum is this is out of place. Thank you!

My understanding is it more or less needs to be scrubbed off and is simply a tedious task. One common ingredient would be a bit of bleach mix in with water as it can be stronger then a normal detergent.
I'm guessing hydrogen peroxide may help after the initial cleaning as it would soak into the plastic and perhaps help to remove the smell by adding some of the peroxide smell etc... but that is just a guess on my part but defiantly doesn't hurt to try.

I use Clorox Wipes because they have a little bleach inside

Ya, try the hydrogen peroxide fix for yellowing, it'll probably take the smell out.

Okay, here's the best solution for the smell
Go get a bag of BBQ charcoal put a good amount of it in a bag with your Transformers and then tie up the bag and leave it for 3 - 5 days.
The smoke smell will be gone. I've done this many times and it worked everytime.

Bbq charcoal huh? Sounds messy but I'll give it a try.
Does bleach damage the surface at all? Thank you all for your experinces and suggestions.

Couple thoughts...
-just good old fashioned rubbing alcohol and good paper towels
-the 'Hydrogen Peroxide' process cleans as well as brightens...I wonder if this can help for particularly bad figures... http://www.cybertron.ca/boards/showthread.php?t=15647

Well an update:
Mr Clean Magic eraser on Rail Racer is a bad idea.
It'll strip the paint off. So far the other G1, G2 and Beast Wars bots weren't affected by the abrasion.
