Re: Question about casting parts

The Alumilite kit is really nice...I used it to make two 2-part molds and a 1-sided mold. I've replicated Headmaster Spike's left/right arms, a Revoltech backpack from a Robotech figure, and the one-sided mold was the fin for MP Skywarp.

I did not have any issues with bubbles in the mold...they turned out perfect and they didn't damage the part at all...and as you may know, the MP Skywarp fin even has silver/purple paint on it!

I did; however, have issues with bubbles in the resin. I tried a few different things like how I poured, tapping the table, etc. but I'm going to try more agressive 'debubbling' method for my next project. I did find the Alumilite resin cures a little quicker than I'd like--only 45 seconds or so before it's getting thick so I might try a different brand of resin.

IMHO, their silicon is top rate tho!

Re: Question about casting parts

Oh and one quick thing--with the plasticine included in the kit (and using the instructions) the 2-part molds are awesome. Note they take twice as long to make (about 2 days) because you can only build one half at a time.

I also purchased their mold release which is required to make a 2-part mold. It worked perfectly. Note that the mold release is not needed for each part, only making the mold.

If the mold has 'undercut' geometry or very thin features, then mold-release will extend its life.
