Canadian Slag Episode 27 - Triple cha cha cha cha changers

Turn and face the train (Astrotra-tra-trainges)....No this isn't an episode dedicated to Bowie parodies but a look at the parallels between Transformers and music, both modern and classics. We also cover our favourite Generation 1 animation error...and with so many, it was hard to pick one! For our getting to know topic we cover ol' timer and weapon specialist Ironhide and his huge history over 26 years. Finally, a healthy dose of what the hell were they thinking when they decided to make Forest Battle Optimus Prime?!

Episode 27 - Triple cha cha cha cha changers
Host: Mike (Aernaroth) w/ Chris (GMfan), Daniel (Protoman)
- Transformers parallels in music
- Favourite G1 animation error (for Metroplex79)
- Getting to know Ironhide (for Metroplex79)
- What the hell were they thinking?! Forest battle Optimus Prime

Downloading now. I'll probably wait and listen to it when I get up tomorrow so I have a coffee and bagel to go with it.

Wouldn't be the first time we saw Rodimus choke under pressure.

I like the discussion of the animation errors, is there a compilation of all of them somewhere? Here's one I like...

P.S. G1's a Masterpiece!

Re: Canadian Slag Episode 27 - Triple cha cha cha cha changers

Woo-Hoo!!! More me!!!

Thanks guys. Loved the music segment.

New suggestions:
-favorite US Marvel G1 comic issue discussion (or can be broken down Top 10, and 1 issue done per episode as time filler)
-favorite UK Marvel G1 comic issue
-favorite ugly color scheme on a toy (any toyline)
-favorite BW verbal joust (in an episode)
-favorite KO in your collection (and/or overall)
-Episode Discussion: Decepticon in King Arthur's Court
-Toy subgroup Discussion: Micromasters, G2 GoBots/Spychangers, G2 Cyberjets, BW Mutant Beasts
-Getting to Know: Dead End, Dirge, Ransack

Possible fun topics:
[ripping off the Star Wars cookbook I saw in a store once]
1. making of a "Transformers Cookbook" (Cerebros Cherrios, Powerglide Poptarts, Thunder Crackers, Warpath Waffles, Quintesson Qookies, Inferno Hot Sauce, Brawn Brownies, Predaking Pie, etc)

2. odd TF merchandise that was never made (and probably never will)...back scratcher, shoe horn, coat hangers, desks, puppets, etc....in contrast to stuff that was released, like bubble bath, party hats, toothbrush, pencils, shoes, belt buckle, etc.
(I guess some of the released stuff can go under the "What the Hell Were They Thinking?" segment as well)

Yeah, some ideas are better than others.

Re: Canadian Slag Episode 27 - Triple cha cha cha cha changers

Another informative and entertaining episode, guys. So you're asking for suggestions? Well to be honest I just hope you keep doing what you're doing because Canadian Slag has been a solid podcast all round.

If anything, I'd like to see (hear?) a getting to know about everyone's favorite mineralogist, Swerve. The G1 minibot was my very first transformer (and I still have in my collection) and is that one character that I just have to collect every toy that bears his name.
It would be interesting to hear how he went from a pickup to a corvette and sports car (I swear that Universe 1.0 was meant to be Lightspeed but Hasbro couldn't get the name). We could learn more about the enigma that is the Aveo Swerve that was released as a promotional item and laugh the whole time about his short and painful appearance in the G1 cartoon.

Otherwise keep up the great work and just don't forget to enjoy yourselves. I know that if you guys weren't having fun making these podcasts I wouldn't be having fun listening to them.

Re: Canadian Slag Episode 27 - Triple cha cha cha cha changers

Great ep guys,

A few questions:
It is nice that the transformers are becoming more iconic in popular culture and music in general, but it seems like the Hiphop and Rap genres have really embraced the Transformers with big names like Chris Brown, L'il Wayne and Wu Tang clan leading the way. What are your thoughts surrounding Transformers and Hip Hop?

Also, animated errors are always a fun topic as there are so many errors to chose from. My fav is from the Animated movie when Devastator hit Sludge in the back and his eye balls fly out of his head like some Bugs Bunny cartoon.

And for the record, Call of the Primitives is one of the best animated Transformers shows ever imo; too bad the story is kinda weak.

All in all, great work once again!

The prevalence of transformers references in rap and hip-hop is most likely due to numerous, complex reasons. Among them is likely the fact that rap/hip-hop is in its current incarnation a relatively new medium. Thus it draws on a more modern cultural and referential basis than in other genres. Basically, the "newness" of urban rap/hip-hop could lead to a larger capacity for the adoption of surrounding cultural trends and motifs, whereas other genres have at this point already established their own recurring themes, reference points, and lyrical trends. The willingness to draw from other cultural points such as other, often seemingly contradictory musical genres, historical and political events and commentaries, and even other mediums, such as kung fu movies, is readily seen in rap and hip hop, and is arguably one of its greatest strengths.

It could also be that due to the more lyrical nature of the genre, as opposed to a more melodic nature, that to evoke response, it becomes more important to draw upon more concrete concepts, rather than emotional melodies. To do so, the artists, many of whom are young males (again, tying back into the newness of the genre) utilize what they feel is a universal cultural foundation for others like them, which itself is built on a zeitgeist that includes transformers.

Or maybe they, like us, just think transformers are cool and that dropping a shout-out to transformers in their songs sounds good. I have no idea.

And what makes you think the jumping eyes were an animation error? Maybe they meant to do them like that. =P

I'm pretty sure Jean's father from Victory is everyone's favorite TF mineralogist, as Swerve is a metallurgist. I don't even know if he's everyone's favorite, since Perceptor is also a metallurgist. But yeah, Swerve would be pretty cool to cover.
