recolors and variants

i got a question for you guys, do you display repaints? as in the same character (ie movie ratchet has like 5 recolors) or just display one version, but if it is renamed as a different character (that's a different story)? my bookcases are getting pretty full and i think ive decided to weed some recolors out and put them away, but im having a hard time with it, since i like to see all my toys displayed. what do you guys think?

i think the day of putting everything away for renos is coming soon since ill be moving the bookcases around........i came to this dilema due to the toys falling off the shelfs often (like everytime i open the doors). i guess that what happens when someone has too many but not enough room to display them all.....

if you wanna see how cluttered it is click on my collection link below. here is an example of 1 shelf, since some people wonder without clicking on my collection thread.

-5 optimus primals (2 japanese exclusives, 1 japanese version,1tru exclusive,2 regular release)
-6 cheetors (1 japanese reissue,3 variants, 2 regular release)
-4 rhinoxs (1 japanese reissue, 3 regular release)
-7 dinobts (2 renames, 2 japanese versions, 3 regular releases)
-4 robot masters optimus primals
-2 airazors (1 dvd exlcusive, regular release)
-2 tigatrons (1 japanese reissue, 1 regular release)
-2 snarls (1 rm, 1 regular release)
-2 optimus primal bats ( 1 japanese exclusive, 1 regular)

which ones would you guys pull off? the movie line is another story.......i wanna box them all up lol.

Re: recolors and variants

I generally avoid repaints unless they're a different character. If the repaint is different enough, I'll have them posed near each other, looks interesting. If they're similar, I'll have them further apart.

Re: recolors and variants

If its a repaint of the same character then I don't tend to buy them. Heck even the minor remolds of the same character (like concept camaro BB) I only keep one around (Bumblebees are easy to get rid of, my girlfriend loves him so I just give em to her).

Re: recolors and variants

I displayed them all, but normally how I display figures is by year and wave, so normally those repaints don't find themselves next to each other.

Example, like Ratchet you just mentioned.

My wave 1 TFTM 2007 movie line has him. Then down the line I have the Wave 3 TFTM 2007 "G1" Rescue Ratchet along with all the other G1 nods in the same wave and so on. Fast Forward to the ROTF stuff, he is alongside Ironhide and Prime his repaint buddies, but the are so far (due to waves) at that point from the other repaints it does not hurt the display. It all works out.

displaying by waves is a good idea, but i need more room to do that. plus i like seeing all the molds right next to each other.

Re: recolors and variants

For me it depends. For the most part I try to avoid repaints as a whole when they are for the sake of repainting. However, sometimes the repaint represents another character (which I am all over). If they are from the same series, they will likely end up together (eg. Cybertron Hot Shot & Excillion). Other repaints tend to be from other series [cough]Movie 1 Line[/cough] and they will be migrated to another shelf in cases where I feel they fit into another line better (eg. the lime green Cybertron Landmine repaint is part of Classics for me).

Re: recolors and variants

i usually try to only display a repaint if it also has a new head or something different than the original mold.i do the same as jourdo mixing some of the guys around to where i felt they fit in better.(breakaway/getaway and crankcase make better classics than tftf07 bots imo)
other bots are just out on display because they would take up too much "tub" room.one that comes to mind is armada super prime.....
  • armada super prime combined with jetfire and overload
  • powerlinx armada prime combined with pwrlynx jetfire and energon ultramagnus o/l repaint
  • costco armada prime combined with costco overload
  • armada prime gumball machine that's the same size as the normal super prime
that's alot of wasted shelf space on repaints....

Re: recolors and variants

Same character repaint on the same shelf??

Nope. Best version of the character goes on the main display extras go on the "auxillary" shelf

Re: recolors and variants

I tend to avoid repaints, no real point. Well, unless they're really nice repaints like Stealth Bumblebee... Now he's just plain sweet!!!
