Question New graphics card?

I recently downloaded a game and to play it I need a better graphics card. If I get a new graphics card, will PC games from around 2000 work with the new graphics card? I'm not good with computers

Re: New graphics card?

New games will still work. How good a new game runs depends on how good a card you buy, and how old the components are around it.

Re: New graphics card?

If you show us the link to the game and tell us what computer parts you have, we can probably see what the problem is (might not be the graphics card only?).

If you download this program, CPU-Z, it can tell you what PC parts your computer is made of if you don't know.

There is no virus or harmful software on it, it is safe.

EDIT: Nvm, the program doesn't show video card model, how annoying. Damn.

Re: New graphics card?

Some old games won't work with the new graphics cards. I know I have Homeworld: Cataclysm, and it only runs on one computer in my house, the oldest computer that I still use. Running it on any newer computers using either hardware or software 3d rendering causes it to crash.

That said, about 98% of games should be okay. You just have to worry about the few picky ones.

Thumbs up Re: New graphics card?

Thanks for the replies. I have decided to buy a Laptop for Trackmania. I needed a Laptop anyways. What kinds of Laptops that are currently sold in retail can support the following:

Minimum requirements:
Supported OS: Windows 2000/XP/XP-x64/Vista
Processor: Pentium IV 1.6GHz / AthlonXP 1600+
Graphics: 3D accelerator 16 MB DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics card
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c or better
Memory: 256 MB (512 MB with Vista)
Sound: 16 bit DirectX compatible sound card
Hard Drive: 750 MB free disk space

Thanks a lot for your time!

Re: New graphics card?

Anything new, that isn't one of those compact solid stated hard drive laptops. Trackmania does rock. I have no idea why that game isn't on any console other than DS.

Just an addition. If you are gonna get a laptop just get a dual processor, not those cheapy ones running. Its usually only a 100$ difference, but makes sense over the life of the laptop. You can always add ram, or get more HD space, but you can't change the processor. Well you can, but its a bitch.

Re: New graphics card?

Most new laptops on the market now have spec. way better than that minimal requirements

Don't know what your budget is but if you really wanted to haul it around spend the money on one that is under 5 pound. Most cheaper laptops (the common 15" screen ones) are 6+lb which is a chore to have it in all day esp. if you go for a bigger capacity battery (8 or 9 cells).
