I almost get the impression that it's been more about errors in pricing and someone rushing to get everything cancelled before they left and call back those that did.

I think it is more the common problem that online sites have from big to small.
It seems to plague all kinds of sites from independent sites like some of the sponsor sites here, up to the big guys like Walmart.
Old, out of date, sold out items don't get deleted in a prompt fashion. As such they sit on these sites for weeks, months, years and then all it takes is a simple goof by someone and they go live again when there is no stock available.
I get it, why delete an item from the system when you may get more stock? However they all would be alerted (eventually) that the item is no longer available for purchase and should, at that time, remove it from their site.
Now with big companies like Walmart that can be missed from time to time. Considering the tens of thousands of items they have on their site. However it really shouldn't be missed to such a degree as what happened here. For the independent guys I get that it is a lot of work and it is easier to worry about it at a later date. Although some sites really shouldn't have items still listed that are over 2 years out of stock.
Anyway, it is all to say remember the old saying....."if it's too good to be true, it probably is"
