That's to mimic G1 Prime cab + trailer. It's no coincidence the rear part transforms into a battle station.

I can't say much more as I don't physically have it, but yeah, there will be a Seibertron.com gallery of Knight Morpher tomorrow, something we've organized together with MMC.

There are some nice photos in that set.

As for the backpack thing, thats part of the original design by Guido Guidi.
