The easiest way around that is to prime with a grey (for the smoothness), hit it with a light coat of white paint,
then go on and spray the light/bright colors that you were planning.
I used to think like you (white primer for light colors, grey primer for darker colors), but after much experimentation, it really didn't matter in the end, and grey primer is really the way to go for smoother finishes.
