Fun Topic: To toss boxes or to not toss?!

Hey everyone,

Here's a fun topic for everyone to give their opinions:

Do you toss your boxes or keep them after buying/opening a figure?

I ask this question since I think collecting has taken on an interesting "twist" now that Hasbro has started these new types of packaging for figures. The whole point of keeping the plastic on the packaging has always been to protect the figure but for MISB collectors, it served also as a display piece that also kept the figures "mint". Now that it has changed, is a figure really "mint" anymore? Is there a point anymore to preserve a figure and it's packaging?

I used to enjoy collecting things MISB, but now, I am questioning it. With these changes and the personal logistics behind it (e.g. Spacing), the figure seems like the only thing that just matters (as always) and tossing the boxes for deluxes-leaders seems more tempting.

Thanks for reading!

Re: Fun Topic: To toss boxes or to not toss?!

I have always tossed them because I don't display MISB and it just takes up space to store them. Sometimes I keep some boxes for a little while, but most get tossed eventually. I currently have a couple empty boxes stored - Two MP boxes for the two MPs I have and the Devastator reissue box. I have 5 figures in boxes - Siege Jefire, Siege Reflector box set, Earthrise Sky Lynx, Combiner Wars Ultra Magnus and G1 Optimus Prime Reissue (no trailer). CW Ultra Magnus I picked up used and the seller sold it with the box, I am planning to give it to my son at some point - once he has it the box will go. Once the three Siege/Earthrise guys go back out on permanent display there boxes will likely go. The G1 Prime is the only figure I currently plan to keep MISB.

I like a lot of the artwork on boxes and if space wasn't a concern I would probably keep most of it, plus it is nice for reselling. I have picked up a lot of used figures that came with boxes/cardbacks, sometimes I feel more guilty tossing those boxes/cardbacks because it came from a collector who maintained them and was nice enough to pass it on to me. However, the almighty space issue. I designated a certain amount of space for storage and display, early in collecting boxes occupied more of that space, but eventually got weeded out in order to add more figures.

I don't resell much, so I don't keep the boxes. Why not collect jpgs then.

I only keep MP boxes fully intact. Otherwise, I break down the boxes and/or cut them up to keep the front artwork and back of box. I have an old large filing cabinet where I store all paperwork and artwork/boxes.

Re: Fun Topic: To toss boxes or to not toss?!

I throw out almost all domestic TF boxes (I think I have a couple of CW boxsets and Trypticon and my NA release Masterpiece TF boxes). But I keep all my Japanese TF boxes these days because it helps with resell value or for potentially moving since those are usually the most expensive so I want to have a safer way to store them for moving.

But I have enough MPs now I think I need to revisit that...

Been keeping damn near all boxes, even though I'm opening every figure

It's... becoming a problem

I used to keep all my boxes, but storage space was an issue and I’ve since started to discard the boxes of domestic releases for figures I’ve opened.

My reasoning being that for mainline stuff, it doesn’t affect the resell value *that* much. If I were to sell them down the line, potential buyers would be more concerned with whether it’s been opened than whether I still have the original box. I just bag and label the accessories (and undisplayed figures) and store them in a bin.

That being said. For (3P)MP figures, I have kept nearly all of my boxes. I’m not too concerned with resell value, but rather because in the case of MP scaled figures, some could be difficult to ship or transport without the original box and packaging. For example, the GP Dinobots would be tricky to transport in robot mode without their boxes. I should probably re-evaluate MP boxes on a case by case basis because together they take up a lot of space. I threw away Hasbro MP Soundwave’s gigantic box because it was the most inefficient box I had.

For legends scaled stuff like NewAge, I’ve kept my boxes so far because all of them put together hasn’t taken up that much space.. yet.

I used to recycle my boxes without a seconds hesitation. Since they switched to boxes for deluxe with siege in the artwork has been quite nice I've started keeping them. Keeping open blister cards was just a pain in the ass.

And the SS86 dioramas obv

Would Speedia Velocitron count as mainline though they are store exclusives?

Same here. I have a whole closet full of boxes. I think it's time they went to the recycle bin.

Man, it's gotta be rough for the MIB guys. The Open windows like shattered glass are so fragile my ultra magnus was ripped open from having wreckgar on top of it.

Ehhhhh they're better to have for resale.

I'm keeping my Titan boxes long term (in case of needed storage for whatever reason), but most of the others get recycled.

I just take my time getting to it :)

I've been keeping mine as well and like you said, it's getting to be a problem (been doing it since the Robots in Disguise line). Do you keep the internal cardboard as well (what the figure was tied to) or just the external box?

I just remembered that I have also been keeping my Dr Wu micro figure boxes. Doesn't take up too much space, so far.

I literally have a closet full of boxes. Estimating about 200 or so. Mostly for 3rd party figures for resale if I ever decide to sell. I keep takara mp boxes as well, but any hasbro mp andcretail boxes usually dont nake it pass the parking lot garbage cans

I keep some boxes for expensive/import figures, to keep accessories stored and for moving.

I used to keep the back of a lot of boxes, or the inserts, with the thought of using them for wall art/collage in the future, recently threw out a bunch over the labour day weekend.

I am keeping some, like the backs and sides of black series, the backs and sides of Lightning Collection, the sides of Legacy and other transformers. But for marvel Legends I am ripping them open and recycling everything, as there is not consistent art style, and now it's all renders as the art.

I also have all my titan box art, and the studio series back panels, but I will probably get rid of those in the next year or so when I move again.

As someone who grew up with the Bay movies, I told myself I would keep all studio series boxes, but goddamn they're making so many of them... Other than that I keep MP boxes so they don't get damaged, and any G1 reissues because the classic packaging is just awesome. I don't know if I want to keep all my studio series boxes (maybe only the Bay ones?) but I plan to have all of them on a shelf like books in numbered order, I do throw out the plastic inserts so I can fold the boxes, but damn it is still a lot of space.

MPs (official and 3rd party) as well as G1 I keep. I also keep my Titan boxes as they hold a lot of things for storage and moving

Re: Fun Topic: To toss boxes or to not toss?!

The only boxes worth keeping are vintage, exclusive, foreign, and MP. Everything else, especially modern stuff, is just WAAAY too common for the box to ever really effect it's "worth" later on, because there are just too many "collectors" these days who think their MISB Siege Optimus Prime will be their retirement fund or their kids college fund, and the aftermarket will be flooded with these things in the next 5-10 years.

I keep and flatten boxes, but toss any and all inserts into recycling. I keep the instructions as well.

My Masterpiece figures stay in the box.

This is literally, exactly what I do too. I grew up with Bayverse too and had a bunch of SS boxes before recycling them. I also keep MP & G1 boxes. Literally to a tee the same situation dude!

Actually almost the same. I do still have a Titan box if I’m not mistaken. I also have a bunch of Prime boxes, but that’s because my whole Prime collection is MISB and therefore another discussion entirely.

Re: Fun Topic: To toss boxes or to not toss?!

I tend to keep larger boxes that will end up being storage for older bots, packed in as efficiently as possible. Masterpiece boxes tend to be the largest and sturdiest. CW Devastator's box is the biggest, and therefore fits the most in it.I use the box from TRU MP Soundwave for all the instructions. I also need more closet space for more storage.

Darkroar 09-29-2022 01:55 PM

Re: Fun Topic: To toss boxes or to not toss?!

I tend to keep some boxes folded down; throwing away any inserts/ties/plastic to keep them in place, etc. A few years back, though, I threw away quite a few boxes so now it's mostly masterpiece and higher end boxes.

Although I don't like things taking space, a part of me would like to have the boxes now since I started selling some stuff.

I also collect some Super 7 Ultimates and I currently have the boxes and inserts for them because they are so expensive, but I'm leaning towards getting rid of them or at least the plastic inside and folding them down.
